The Story
The Rotary Club of Accra Legon East has organized an adolescent hygiene awareness programme for students of Somanya Technical Institute, Agomeda Technical Institute, and Agomeda D/A Basic School, the same institutions that recently benefited from the club’s mechanized borehole project.
The Rational by Rotary
The sensitization exercise aimed to educate pupils on personal hygiene, particularly menstrual health, as part of efforts to promote the overall well-being of young learners. During the session, officials and experts engaged the students in interactive discussions on the importance of maintaining good hygiene practices, fostering confidence, and breaking the stigma often associated with menstruation.
Distributing Menstrual Hygiene Products
As part of the initiative, the Rotary Club distributed menstrual hygiene products to the female pupils to support continuous school attendance and reduce absenteeism among adolescent girls.

President of the Rotary Club of Accra Legon East Speaks on the Imitative
In an interview with Rays Report, the President of the Rotary Club of Accra Legon East, Rotarian Emmanuel Sessou, underscored the significance of the initiative, noting that promoting menstrual hygiene is key to empowering young girls and ensuring gender equality in education.
“This is to help them to keep hygiene as part of awareness creation for young girls and boys as they transition from childhood to adolescent. We know that sometimes when it comes to issues of sanitary pads, it’s difficult to engage and to buy”. -He said
Rotary’s Broader Mission
He further emphasized that such interventions form part of Rotary’s broader mission to enhance health, education, and community development “so with these sanitary pads that we are giving them, this is sustainable and reusable for as long as one year”.
Sustainability of the Initiative
According to President Emmanuel Sessou, the Rotary Club of Accra Legon East, intends keeping the initiative on for as long as they can support it to keep the girls safe and their menstrual hygiene intact.

Praising the Initiative
The intervention received participation from the management of the school and community leaders who commended the Rotary Club of Accra Legon East and their partners for their promise to addressing one of the most pressing desires affecting the students.
The Cross-Border Collaboration
This initiative proves the power of unity and cross-border collaboration, demonstrated by the lasting partnership between the Rotary Club of Accra Legon East and the Rotary Club of Pocatello in the United States. Their shared commitment to service and community impact serves as a cue that collective action can spark meaningful and lasting change across communities and generations.
