The Story
The National Investment Bank (NIB) has announced plans to offer good and concessionary loans to members of the Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union (ICU).

This latest development by the Bank is to show gratitude for the union’s support in opposing the proposed merger between National Investment Bank and the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB)
Point Of View by MD of NIB
The Managing Director of NIB Chief Dr. Doli-Wura Zakaria speaking at the official inauguration of the newly elected executives of the bank’s Professional and Management Staff Union recounted ICUs support during the proposed merger.
According to him, the ICU played a crucial role in advocating for the preservation and independence of NIB, reinforcing the bank’s strategic vision and stability.
“We know that ICU is not only with us alone, but we also want to grant the membership and staff of ICU very good and concessionary loans, so that at least you know that your work and efforts in bringing us to stay is not forgotten. So trust that we will submit a proposal to you and we hope that we will work together”.
Appreciation by NIB
The gesture, according to the Banks MD reflects not only the bank’s appreciation to ICU but also its commitment to foster a strong partnership with organised labour and staff unions.
ICUs Role
ICU Ghana had been among the key stakeholders who publicly opposed the proposed merger between NIB and ADB, citing concerns over job security, governance, and the strategic interests of both financial institutions.
ICU petitioned the government to allow both banks to maintain their individual sovereignty and to continue to perform their core mandates.
Reaction From The Partners
The announcement was met with applause from the ICU top officials, union members and staff of the NIB who lauded the move as a positive step towards worker empowerment and corporate-labour collaboration.
The event was also used to honour ICU officials and NIB management for their contributions in ensuring the bank’s survival.
Meanwhile, the NIB is repositioning itself towards industrialisation.
