The story
Three (3) educational institutions, Somanya Technical Institute, Agomeda Technical Institute, and Agomeda D/A Basic School can now breathe a sigh of relief following the commissioning of three mechanized boreholes with filtration systems by the Rotary Club of Accra Legon East.
The Background
For years, these schools and their surrounding communities have battled perennial water shortages, forcing pupils and students to spend productive learning hours searching for clean water instead of focusing on their studies. The situation not only affected academic performance but also the general well-being of the learners.
The Rotary’s Initiative
After conducting a thorough needs assessment, the Rotary Club of Accra Legon East, in partnership with the Rotary Club of Pocatello in the United States, stepped in to address the challenge. With support from a grant provided by the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International, the clubs jointly funded and constructed the boreholes at a total cost of $38,000.

At a brief commissioning ceremony, the President of the Rotary Club of Accra Legon East Rotarian Emmanuel Sessou, expressed his delight at seeing the project come to fruition, describing it as a significant step toward improving education and community welfare.
“Today we are celebrating not just infrastructure but a vision and a collaboration of service, this facility is going to serve about 2,000 students and residents and this contributes to our shared commitment of dignity, health and opportunity”-He said.
Beneficiary Schools Commends Rotary and Partners
School authorities also lauded the initiative, emphasizing that the reliable water supply will go a long way to enhance hygiene, attendance, and learning outcomes.
Stakeholders Gives Rotary a Thumbs Up
The Queen Mother of the Agormeda Traditional Area, Nana Dr. Korlekwor Korli Yohi III, commended the project’s broader impact, noting that it would benefit not only the schools but the entire community.
“This kind gesture is directly related to many of the Sustainable Development Goals because when we have water, we have improved nutrition and that is Sustainable Development Goal 2, Health-Goal 3 and all of that”- Nana Dr. Korlekwor Korli Yohi III stated.

District Governor of Rotary Calls for Proper Use of Facility
For her part, the District Governor of Rotary District 9104, Nana Yaa Siriboe, urged stakeholders to maintain the facilities properly to ensure their long-term functionality.
“We say water is life, an assessment was made, and it was found out that, you need portable drinking water and today we are here to commission that. Please dear ones. let’s make good use of the water and the facility”. – Nana Yaa Siriboe remarked.
Rotary Members Promotes Sustainability
In line with Rotary’s global commitment to environmental protection, the club also organized a tree-planting exercise across the beneficiary schools. This initiative, members explained, is intended to promote sustainability, protect the newly installed water facilities, and contribute to a greener environment for future generations.
