Ghana Reduces Hajj Fare

The Government of Ghana has once again reduced the cost of the Hajj pilgrimage, lowering the fare from GH¢62,000 to GH¢60,000 following fruitful negotiations with Saudi Arabian service providers.

Hajj Committee Makes the Announcement

Announcing the reduction at a press conference in Accra on Monday, 13th October 2025, the Chairman of the Ghana Hajj Committee, Hon. Ibrahim Abdul Rauf Tanko, revealed that the decision came after President John Mahama directed the committee to explore all possible means to ease the financial burden on Ghanaian pilgrims.

Ghana Hajj Committee Chair, Hon. Ibrahim Abdul Rauf Tanko making the announcement

“His Excellency the president reduced the Hajj fare from 75,000 to 62,000, that was in previous Hajj and today he has agreed he was going to reduce and he has reduced it from 62,000 to 60,000”.  He added

The Commitment Towards a Fair & Affordable Hajj

According to Hon. Tanko, the latest review reflects government’s continuous commitment to ensuring that every Ghanaian Muslim who wishes to embark on the holy pilgrimage can do so at a fair and affordable cost.

This marks the second reduction in the Hajj fare this year alone. Earlier in February 2025, government slashed the cost from GH¢75,000 to GH¢62,000, and now again in October 2025, it has been reduced further to GH¢60,000.

Encouraging Muslims to Make Early Payment

Hon. Tanko encouraged the Muslim community to take advantage of the adjustment and make timely payments to secure their slots.

“We made a case to the Saudi authorities and they have given us a quota of 6,780 and we have not exhausted and we are applying for more quota. So, we decided let’s take the 6,780 to justify the need for getting more quota going forward. But we need to pay on time before the Hajj authorities will take a decision. So, if we are able to pay on time, they will say this people are actually in need”. Hon. Tanko explained.

He also commended the dedicated staff and partner agencies for their tireless efforts in ensuring a smooth and transparent Hajj process.

Expressing Satisfaction

Meanwhile several Hajj agencies and stakeholders have expressed satisfaction with the reduction, applauding the leadership of both President Mahama and the Hajj Committee for demonstrating commitment, accountability, and responsiveness to the needs of the Muslim community.

Point of View from Ghana Hajj Agents Association

Speaking to Rays Report in an interview, the Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Hajj Agents Association, Mr. Seth Ibrahim Ayi said “we believe that when the price of Hajj is reduced, the people will have the financial strength to make payment for Hajj. We are very happy with this latest announcement”.

Hajj Leadership Gets Praises

Under Hon. Tanko’s leadership, the Ghana Hajj Committee has strengthened its collaboration with relevant Saudi institutions and enhanced its operational efficiency,  a development many see as a positive step toward restoring public confidence in the management of the Hajj process.
